Rules
Overview
League
matches are played five-on-five in roller hockey rinks using a standard,
size five soccer ball. The goal cage is one meter high by three
meters wide but orange cones or other markers may be used for informal
competitions. A helmet is required but other protective gear is
optional.
The match consists of two, 25-minute periods separated with a five minute halftime break. Teams are allowed unlimited substitutions.
The ball comes into play by means of kick-offs at the beginning
of each half or goal kicks, throw-ins, and free kicks during the
periods. Play does not stop after a goal is scored, similar to basketball.
The ball is out of play when it enters the goal cage, goes outside
the perimeter of the rink, or when the match has been stopped by
the referee. If the ball goes outside the rink, it is thrown in
from where it went out. If the match is stopped by the referee,
play is resumed by a free kick at a spot designated by the referee.
To insure safety in the goal, only one defensive player and no offensive
players are allowed in the goal crease. The referee may allow a
goal scored with an offensive player in the crease, if it is deemed
that there was no endangerment from the play.
All
players are forbidden to handle the ball while the ball is in play,
therefore specially identified goalkeepers are allowed, but not
required.
Minor penalties include handball, delay of game, minor unsportspersonlike
conduct, and dangerous play. Major penalties result in a penalty
kick and a two minute time penalty. Violations include hand interference
of a shot on goal, major misconduct, taunting an official, and accumulating
three minor penalties. Players will be ejected and a penalty kick
assessed for accumulating two major penalties.
