1995
It all started in San Francisco on December
17, 1995. Zack
Phillips was skating down the street when a stray soccer
ball rolled into his path. Zack kicked the ball - fortunately, he
had months of experience playing "kick-the-cone" (keepaway
played with a pine cone while skating) with friends and knew how
to kick and keep rolling. Immediately Zack realized that a soccer
ball was better than a pine cone, so later that day, he introduced
"soccer-on-skates" to his "kick-the-cone" friends
in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.
Two weeks later, December 31, 1995, Zack and a
few friends started the first roller soccer match by marking off
a playing area on John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park. It
quickly grew into a chaotic spectacle of 23 enthusiastic men and
women skaters chasing a soccer ball and trying to score goals.

To
promote the new sport, Zack incessantly kicked his soccer ball toward
friends and random skaters every where he went - even during business
trips related to his GE Capital Business Analyst position. It was
easy to get others kickin' it and the fledging sport gained the
nickname "ZackBall" - coined by San Francisco skater Johnny
Mac.
The San Francisco roller soccer scene continued
to develop with weekly events happening in Golden Gate Park and the
spacious asphalt of North Beach Playground (a.k.a Joe DiMaggio Playground).
The first playground event was attended by Amy Blumenthal, her roller
hockey friends and the "Miles Family Skaters" (David, Melanie,
Tiffany and little David).

The
RollerSoccer International Federation (RSIF) was created
by Zack in August 1996 to formally promote, develop and govern the
sport of RollerSoccer.
Before year end Zack had promoted the sport in
Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, New York,
Hong Kong and Taipei, initiated monthly matches at
the Bladium Roller Hockey facility in San Francisco, and created
his unique "soccerhead"
hairstyle.
